What is PFAS? Why It Matters for Sustainable Packaging

As awareness of environmental health grows, more consumers and businesses are asking a critical question: Does my packaging contain PFAS? At Biopackable, we’re committed to complete transparency and sustainability, which means educating our customers about PFAS and our decision never to include it in our products.

What is PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of more than 4,700 man-made chemicals used to make products resistant to water, oil, and grease. You’ll find PFAS in many everyday items, including non-stick cookware, nail polish, fast food wrappers, and dental floss.

The problem? PFAS chemicals do not break down in the environment, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals.” They accumulate in soil, water, and even the food we eat, raising serious concerns for both environmental and human health.

Plant Fibre & PFAS in the Industry

Historically, PFAS has been added to plant fibre and paper packaging, especially in foodservice products, to improve grease and moisture resistance. However, these additives come at a cost: they prevent the packaging from being compostable and contribute to long-term environmental pollution.

Do Biopackable Products Contain PFAS?

No. Biopackable has never intentionally used PFAS in any of our packaging. While PFAS is still widely used in the industry, we’ve taken a stand against it from day one.

All of our plant fibre packaging is designed to be compostable, plastic-free, and made without added PFAS. Our manufacturing facilities align with our commitment to cleaner, safer materials.

You can shop with confidence knowing that our:

They are made from natural materials with no added PFAS, and are certified home compostable (NF T-51-800) and industrially compostable (EN 13432) packaging

Is PFAS Compostable?

No. Any product that contains added PFAS cannot be certified compostable, whether for home or commercial facilities.

Certifying bodies such as DIN CERTCO and the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) set strict thresholds (typically 100 parts per million of total fluorine) to prevent greenwashing. Even trace contamination from water or equipment is taken into account.

That’s why, although we do not label our products as “PFAS-free” in the absolute sense (due to trace environmental exposure), we guarantee that our range is produced without any intentionally added PFAS.

Our Commitment to a Cleaner Future

At Biopackable, we’re proud to be part of the shift away from PFAS in packaging. Our commitment includes:

  • Zero intentionally added PFAS in all product lines

  • Clearly labelled product pages for transparency

  • Compostability certifications and other documentation available upon request

  • Participation in industry efforts to phase out PFAS globally

We’re continually working to raise the standard for sustainable packaging in China and worldwide.
